Construction Laborer - Excavation & Utilities
Location: Kalamazoo, MI (local work within ~50 miles)
If you're dependable, tough, and take pride in doing real work the right way, this is for you. We're hiring Construction Laborers who show up ready, work hard all day, and support the crew without needing to be asked twice. If you like steady local work with a team that looks out for each other, you'll fit in here.
James E Fulton & Sons is a family-owned excavating and trucking contractor serving Southwest Michigan. We've built our reputation on quality work, outstanding service, and a committed team, and we've been doing it for decades. Around town, you'll recognize our yellow-and-white fleet, a legacy built on visibility, pride, and equipment that's kept clean and maintained.
As a Construction Laborer, you'll support excavation and underground utility crews with hands-on work: shoveling, compacting, spotting, staging materials, and keeping the job moving safely. Suppose you have underground/pipeline experience, great. Suppose you can also run small equipment (skid steer/loader/roller), even better. We use an app-based system for timekeeping and workflow, so basic comfort with a phone/tablet is important.
Responsibilities
- Perform general civil/construction labor on excavation and utility projects
- Shovel, rake, grade, and compact around pipe/structures and in tight areas
- Assist with pipe/utility installation support (staging, bedding, backfill, cleanup)
- Help load/unload tools and equipment, and keep the jobsite organized
- Spot equipment and help maintain safe work zones (traffic/pedestrian awareness)
- Operate basic/small equipment when qualified (skid steer, loader, roller)
- Follow safety rules, wear PPE, and communicate hazards immediately
- Complete time entry/basic job documentation using a mobile app
Qualifications
- 1 or more years of construction labor experience preferred (underground pipelayer /utilities a plus)
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation/attendance
- Physically able to perform the job (lifting, shoveling, climbing in/out of equipment, working outdoors in all conditions)
- Willingness to learn and take direction from foremen/leads
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening (and participate in random testing, as applicable)
- Team-first attitude: honest, dependable, and willing to help wherever needed
- Basic English communication skills for jobsite safety and coordination
